Neem oil is a vegetable oil pressed from the fruits and seeds of Neem (Azadirachta indica), an evergreen tree which is endemic to the Indian subcontinent and has been introduced to many other areas in the tropics.
How we discovered the innovation and innovators.
In 2004 the leader of Dulzugu women group, Madam Ashetu Alhassan visited a neighbour community for a funeral and saw an old women processing neem oil into bottles which she sells in the market. Out of curiosity Madam Ashetu observed the process and decided to try it by herself on her return. She soon mastered the innovation through practice and decided to teach the other members of her group. The seed oil is medicinal, used for soap and also for preservation of grain. The seeds solution as well as the residues from the oil extraction is used as pesticides to protect crops and vegetables. The innovation has enabled the women to earn substantial income through sale of the oil.
Our Role
Solecara Ghana Ltd has partnered with Madam Ashetu Alhassan and Dulzugu women group for the commercial production of neem oil for the international market.
Solecara has partnered with Dulzugu women group by paying a fair price for the neem oil they produced. The women cooperative also receive pre-payments for the neem oil. Solecara as an importer provides a ready market for the neem oil. We also provide a fair labor conditions and living wages by buying directly from the women cooperatives thus eliminating unnecessary middlemen and empowering Ashetu Alhassan’s women’s to strengthen their organizations and become competitive players in the global economy.
Dulzugu women group are now investing their fair trade premiums in social and business development projects like healthcare and many more.
Because the women earn their living from neem oil production, they are now making conscious efforts to protect the neem tree by using environmentally sustainable farming methods that protect farmers' health and preserve valuable ecosystems for future generations.

Our Extraction Method
The seeds are picked under the neem trees. The seeds are cleaned and sun dried. The shells of the seed are decorticated and kernels are pound in a mortar to make a brown powder. The powder is turn into a thick paste by adding water. The paste is kneaded in a basin bowl until the oil begins to appear. The oil is then collected into a separate container and then filled into bottles.
